2027 SPRING WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY CRUISE: HUMPBACK WHALES

Every spring, pacific herring move inshore in the billions to spawn in Sitka Sound. This epic 2-3 week event marks the beginning of spring and offers photographers a unique opportunity to capture iconic Alaskan wildlife attracted by the herring. Humpback whales gather in large numbers exhibiting stunning feeding behaviors, most notably bubble net feeding. Witness and capture this impressive cooperative behavior along with sea lions roving in packs, eagles taking turns swooping on surface herring, and numerous migratory seabirds passing through Southeast Alaska.

STEELHEAD - A WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE

Equinox will be collaborating with Kevin Main of Tongass on the Fly to offer three six-day trips during the peak of the run to explore the coast in search of steelhead. Our goal is to visit several different river systems during the course of each trip. The mothership will anchor at river’s mouth and we access by foot and with our river-jet.

We can accommodate a wide range of skill levels, but basic proficiency with fly-casting is recommended and moderate hiking fitness will be an advantage in getting to the best runs.

The Program

You’ll wake up at the river, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and spend the day with your guides in a battle of wits with steelhead, rainbows and cutthroat trout. When you’ve had enough, we’ll return to the comfort of the yacht to recharge, tie a fly, perhaps enjoy a drink on the upper deck. Fresh seafood is in abundant supply for dinner, and if you crack a window as you fall asleep, you’ll hear the river flowing into the ocean, grouse hooting and otters or whales meandering through the anchorage.

We can accommodate up to 4 guests in 4 private staterooms on a 5 day/6 night steelhead focused expedition in May 2027.  Seats are limited so please contact asap if you’re ready to accept the challenge. We also have the option of salt water fishing, shrimping, crabbing, hiking and kayaking.

Kevin grew up in Colorado, but now calls Petersburg, Alaska home. After guiding in Bristol Bay he returned to Southeast, Alaska to chase steelhead and is deeply passionate about the sport.

Kevin is a licensed captain and CPR/First Aid certified.
