Steelhead - A Wilderness Experience
In a region where mountains meet the sea, the coastline is scattered with thousands of forested islands. Thousands of streams flow from mountains, into valleys and eventually to the ocean. In a select few of these, for a few weeks each spring, the steelhead trout returns.
Little human habitation exists in much of this area. Roads or man-made trails are few, but the dedicated angler can experience one of North America’s most iconic gamefish in a setting of exquisite beauty.
For the second year, Equinox will be collaborating with Kevin Main of Tongass on the Fly. We are offering two six-day trips during the peak of the run to explore the coast in search of steelhead. Our goal is to visit several different river systems during the course of each trip. The mothership will anchor at river’s mouth and we access by foot and with our river-jet.
We can accommodate a wide range of skill levels, but basic proficiency with fly-casting is recommended and moderate hiking fitness will be an advantage in getting to the best runs.
The Program
You’ll wake up at the river, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and spend the day with your guides in a battle of wits with powerful steelhead fresh off the ocean. When you’ve had enough, we’ll return to the comfort of the yacht to recharge, tie a fly, perhaps enjoy a drink on the upper deck. Fresh seafood is in abundant supply for dinner, and if you crack a window as you fall asleep, you’ll hear the river flowing into the ocean, grouse hooting and otters or whales meandering through the anchorage.
We can accommodate up to 4 guests in 4 private staterooms on a 6 day/6 night steelhead focused expedition in May 2026. Seats are limited so please contact asap if you’re ready to accept the challenge. We also have the option of salt water fishing, shrimping, crabbing, hiking and kayaking.
